It's Playtime again at the Outhouse in Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s Playtime sessions return to their original home, The Outhouse in Broughton Street Lane with a programme announced for June and early July.

Pianist Tom Gibbs joins Playtime regulars, saxophonist Martin Kershaws, bassist Mario Caribe and drummer Tom Bancroft to pay homage to jazz legend, pianist-composer Cedar Walton on Thursday June 9. A former member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, where he contributed classics including Ugetsu, Walton went on to become the house pianist for Prestige Records, recording with saxophonists Sonny Cross and Charles MacPherson and guitarist Pat Martino. In a prolific career he also worked with singers Abbey Lincoln and Etta James and trumpeter Lee Morgan, appeared on dozens of recordings and wrote jazz standards including Mosaic, Bolivia and Mode for Joe.

Shetland-born saxophonist Norman Willmore, whose debut album, Alive and Well at the Muckle Roe Hall, made a big impression in 2021, joins the Playtime quartet on Thursday June 23, and trombonist Anoushka Nanguy joins the quartet on Thursday, July 7. Now established with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Nanguy is also part of the award-winning Glasgow collective corto-alto and leads the Noushy 4tet.
