Italian piano master Pieranunzi pays homage to MJQ founder Lewis

Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi pays tribute to John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet on a new album to be released on 20th January, 2023.

Blues & Bach – The Music of John Lewis features Pieranunzi’s trio with Orchestra Filharmonica Italiana, conducted by Michele Corcella and is described as a “crossover within a crossover” as it combines a jazz trio plus string quintet and woodwind quintet.

Almost twenty-two years after Lewis died, Blues & Bach pays tribute to the musical conception and compositional art of the musician who was the founder and musical director of the immensely popular MJQ. The Beatles’ Apple record company even speculated on their sales potential, releasing the album Space in 1969 before the MJQ returned to their Atlantic Records home.

A collaboration between Pieranunzi and Corcella, this new CD from Challenge Records sees Lewis’ compositions reworked and orchestrated for the occasion and features eight pieces including Skating in Central Park, Vendome, Django, and Milano.

Pieranunzi, who was Chet Baker’s favourite European pianist and who toured the UK with the late singer Tina May following the release of their 2015 album Home Is Where the Heart Is, has enjoyed parallel careers in jazz and classical music and has maintained American trios, as well as working extensively in Europe, for over twenty-five years.
